WHAT ARE ALL THOSE GROUPS IN DEERHORN? Fire Station #37? ~ Station Auxiliary? ~ CSZ? ~ OJFSC? ~ Community Association? Confused? Don’t be… Backcountry residents have to be more involved in local issues than their city cousins. We cannot simply depend on others to make the decisions that affect our families and property. As responsible residents, we need to prepare ourselves for the next fire, earthquake or other emergency, and not just depend upon distant services to come to our rescue. In Deerhorn Valley there are five groups made up of residents… like you. Choose one to join and simply attend the regular meetings. No experience necessary; just show up and introduce yourself. Have a cup of coffee. Ask how you can help. Our most critical need will always be for firefighters and emergency responders. These are the folks who can respond most quickly to your 911 call. But we also need volunteers to act as Road Captains and Station Managers and to help with other community projects. Below are the groups of volunteers that work right here in Deerhorn for all of us. Choose one, attend the next meeting, and see how you can help. Your neighbors thank you. –– Kim H.Here is contact information for each group:

VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS: Training is every Thursday at 7pm (feel free to come to training to ask questions!). Next fire academy is in August. First responder/EMT classes coming soon with date TBD. Note: being a volunteer does not require on call 24/7... policy is "family first". EMT’s & FIRST RESPONDERS: Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's): Deerhorn needs both First Responders (Basic First Aid) and EMT's. The Fire District covers all costs for training and equipment. DEERHORN STATION MANAGER(S): We need one or two Station Managers to learn the basics about our Firestation-- the location of materials, generators, phones, maps, resources, etc. During the Harris Fire we were extremely fortunate that Paul Jacob managed to get back into Deerhorn and serve in this capacity throughout the fire. For future emergencies we need a plan-- one that will keep our firefighters on the fire-lines, not manning the Station. ROAD CAPTAINS: We really need these–– one or more for each street in Deerhorn and surrounding areas! Each sub-area of Deerhorn needs someone (an individual or couple?) who will maintain keep up-to-date information on driveway/road access, persons requiring assistance to evacuate, animals/livestock, etc. Some areas (like Mother Grundy) may require several Street Captains. During the Harris Fire, we had units from many parts of California and other states. Dirt roads, a lack of signs, and heavy vegetation made response difficult or impossible. This is an need the entire community must address NOW-- before the next fires. ___________________________
The Outer Jamul Fire Safe Council meets monthly on First Tuesdays. Since 1997 San Diego County has formed more FSC’s than any other county in California, but Deerhorn did not have one… until now. After the Harris Fire, resident Tom Lamb spearheaded the formation of the Outer Jamul Fire Safe Council to focus on wildfire safety and response in our outlying area: Deerhorn, Lyons, Lawson, Honey Springs, Bratton Valley, and Mother Grundy. Meeting focus on what steps we need to take before and during future fires to protect our families and homes. All residents are encouraged to attend ––– or stay in contact with someone who does. Monthly meetings are on the first Tuesday. Every resident should know the best evacuation routes and alternates, large animal evacuation procedures, and how to prepare their homes for the best chance of making it through the next wildfire. "Working for an interconnected and vibrant community" DeerhornValley.net The Antler Newsletter The Deerhorn Directory & Emergency List The mission of the DVCAis to link neighbors and community groups in Deerhorn Valley in ways that bring us closer together. The Community Association formed some 25 years ago to address our lack of a Fire Station. Since then the DVCA has sponsored events and activities to bring people together and create neighbors out of mere residents. A Board of Directors is elected during the first meeting of each year. Like the Fire Safe Council, its target area includes Deerhorn, Bratton, Lyons, Lawson Valleys and all points between. Meetings are held at a neighbor's home and open to the public. Unlike the Auxiliary (which provides support for the Fire Department), the Community Association addresses a wider range of community issues. ___________________________
The Fire Station Auxiliary (Second Tuesdays) raises funds from our local community (Pancake Breakfast, Ice Cream Social, BBQ, etc.). All funds raised in excess of funds needed for the next event are to be turned over the CSZ Board. Meetings are open to the public and all adult members of the community can vote on any motion. Funds raised are used specifically to purchase equipment for our firefighters and our station and also to reimburse volunteers for personal equipment and training classes. They are the group that are sponsoring the Reflective Street Signs (Contact Jim Norton at 468-3183 or download a form here) ___________________________
The CSZ (Community Service Zone) Board (Last Tuesday of the month) is our voice to the County Rural Fire Protection District (RFPD). They submit grant proposals, and manage monies raised by both the CSZ and the Auxiliary. Members of the Board are elected for two-year terms each December. Board members make decisions and send recommendations to RFPD on behalf of the community. Meetings are on the last Tuesday of the month and open for your input and questions.
